If you make things, the question is not whether Business Central can run your accounts. It is whether it can plan materials, schedule the shop floor and cost what you produce. This guide sets out what Business Central covers for UK manufacturers, and what to check before you choose it.

Manufacturing needs the Premium licence
Microsoft's Business Central pricing page says Premium includes everything in Essentials, plus enhanced capabilities for service management and manufacturing. The manufacturing overview confirms that the manufacturing features are available only with the Premium experience.
What it covers

Microsoft describes manufacturing in Business Central as helping you plan, schedule, execute and analyse production:
- Production BOMs define the components of what you make.
- Routings define the operations.
- Work centres and machine centres model capacity and costs.
- Production orders coordinate material consumption, operation time, output and finished goods.
Consumption, output, scrap and operation time can be recorded in production journals, or partly automated with flushing methods.
Planning materials and capacity
On the Planning Worksheet page, you can run the master production schedule (MPS), material requirements planning (MRP), or both. Business Central then suggests purchase, transfer, assembly and production orders.
Pro TipRun MPS and MRP on a copy of real demand in a sandbox before you trust the suggestions.
Subcontracting and quality

Business Central can outsource all or selected operations in a production order to a subcontractor. In Microsoft's 2026 release wave 1 plan, "Use subcontracting capabilities in production processes" became generally available in July 2026, and "Evaluate the quality of goods and materials" in April 2026.
Costing
Microsoft's overview points to how Business Central calculates and adjusts the cost of finished production items and consumed components for financial reconciliation. Agree your costing method with your accountant early.
Watch OutAgree your costing method with your accountant before the first production order is posted.
What to check before you choose

- Your BOMs and routings. How many levels, how many variants, and how often they change.
- Shop-floor recording. Who records output and time, and on what device.
- Planning. Whether you plan to forecast, to order, or both.
- Integrations. Machines, MES or shop-floor systems that need to talk to the ledger.
Microsoft's guide to setting up manufacturing lists what has to be in place first: work centres, routings and production BOMs.
